You make known to me the path of life, and in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forever more. Psalm 16:11
Those who have seen me around know that I usually have a random clump of letters written on my hand. Many of you have asked about it. I've gotten asked if I had a tattoo, if I was cheating on a test (did that one to myself), but most people's curiosity takes them to want to know "what?".
This little bit of (tacky) ink on my hand is a HUGE part of my day. This is how I memorize scripture. I've tried carrying around an index card with a verse on it, I've tried to set a verse as my phone screen saver, I've even tried to play elementary school games in effort to memorize a verse. Nothing has been as affective as this method.
Before I get into this awesome strategy, let's talk about what The Word says. Right now I'm in the middle of reading through Joshua, and I came across this verse the other day that really emphasizes the importance of scripture memorization.
It's Joshua 1:8 which says "This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do." Memorizing scripture renews our mind and transforms our life!
In Deuteronomy 6:4-9, it tells us scripture is to be written on our hearts, let it be the first thing our children learn, to talk about it all the time, and to write it everywhere surrounding ourselves with it.
When we memorize scripture, it's a weapon we can use against the enemy when we're attacked. Like when Jesus was fasting in the desert and Satan began to temp Him. He recited scripture, the Word of God, and the devil left Him. If anything, we should want to memorize scripture because Jesus memorized scripture! And we're called to be just like Him. He is our ultimate example.
Okay, so if you haven't figured it out yet, my strategy is to write the FIRST letter of every word on my hand. And throughout the day when I look down on it, I practice the verse until I get it right. Simple but the cool part about this method is you guys! When people ask me what's on my hand it gives me a great opportunity to witness to them & share a bit of The Truth with them. This method also comes with accountability. If my friends see this written on my hand they call me out and tell me to recite it, challenging me (In reality they probably just want to try to catch me unprepared).
So I encourage you, get in The Word and memorize scripture. Use this method or find a system that works for you! Just Hide God's Word in your heart.
